Sergio Urbani is Secretary General of Fondazione Cariplo, a banking foundation with a total endowment of approximately €8billion, established in 1991 when Italian savings banks were required to separate into a not-for-profit foundation and a commercial banking arm. In the last 25 years Fondazione Cariplo has played a leading role in supporting the social, cultural and economic development of its community (Lombardy Region and Provinces of Novara and Verbano Cusio Ossola). Its grants account for approximately €150million per year and it also leverages on its investment activity to achieve a positive impact.
Sergio Urbani served previously as co-General Manager at CDP Investimenti SGR (“CDPI”), in charge of social housing and, in particular, of the national €2,02billion fund of funds “FIA - Fondo Investimenti per l’Abitare”, the majority investor in a network of 30 local real estate investment funds - covering all Italian regions - dedicated to social housing. Sergio left CDPI by the end of 2015 when over 40 social housing projects, all developed in close cooperation with public Authorities, were completed.
Before joining CDPI, he was Managing Director of Fondazione Housing Sociale (“FHS”), a foundation set up by Fondazione Cariplo, where he dedicated nine years to the development of a social housing program focused on the application of ethical finance to housing needs.
Prior to 2004, Sergio worked in the corporate sector, namely at ABN AMRO Corporate Finance - where he was actively involved in the origination and execution of a large number of advisory projects encompassing structuring of funds, acquisitions, sale procedures, joint ventures, mainly in the real estate, utility, transportation and telecommunication sectors – and at Deloitte & Touche Corporate Finance and Bankers Trust International.
Sergio Urbani graduated cum laude in Business Economics at the Bocconi University of Milan.
